6 Ways to Upgrade Your Back Patio

3 min read

Spring has sprung, and every southerner knows the patio is the center of outdoor activities this time of year.

If your front or back patio could use a little sprucing up, you’re in the right place. Here are our top six ideas to upgrade your patio and get ready for backyard BBQs.

1. Have New Patio Doors Installed

Your patio doors are perhaps the most functional part of your outdoor area. They need to look good and stand up to heavy use. If your patio doors aren’t up to the challenge, it’s time to have new ones installed.

At Window World of Atlanta, we have traditional sliding glass doors, beautiful French rail doors, and classic French doors in a range of colors to match your home. In addition to the updated appearance, you’ll enjoy energy efficiency and durability that can stand up to all of your backyard summer activities.

2. Add Some Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting is important: it can create ambience and, more importantly, it makes your patio safer! There is no shortage of lighting options on the market at price points for every budget. This is a must for front and back patios.

Walkway lights typically go into the ground with stakes. They’re a great way to light walking paths or line your patio area. And of course, string lights are unmatched when it comes to creating a relaxing atmosphere. They also give off more light than other options and are easy to hang almost anywhere.

3. Upgrade Your Concrete Patio With Pavers

There’s nothing wrong with a poured concrete patio, but sometimes you want something with a little more character. If this sounds familiar, covering your patio with pavers is the perfect way to get rid of that concrete pad. Don’t worry, there’s no demolition required!

Covering your poured concrete patio with pavers is an often-overlooked way to refresh your patio. It requires some elbow grease, but if you’re the DIY type, it’s right up your alley! There is a little more to the project than just gluing pavers on top of your concrete, so we recommend finding a good tutorial before starting.

4. Refresh Your Pillows and Cushions

If you find yourself not wanting to spend time on your patio because the furniture just isn’t comfortable, it’s time to upgrade your pillows and cushions.

For wood or metal patio furniture, new cushions make all the difference. In addition to making it more comfy, cushions will allow you to use your metal benches or chairs even when they’ve been sitting in the hot Atlanta sun (we’ve all made that mistake a time or two). New pillows and cushions are also a great way to change up the style of your patio. Bright colors make for a fun, warm space while neutrals create a calm, inviting atmosphere.

5. Hang Mosquito Netting

Summer in the south means mosquitos that can make it hard to enjoy your patio. Citronella candles are a great solution, but if you don’t feel comfortable having a lot of candles or torches around your porch, mosquito curtains are for you. Also called mosquito netting, this type of curtain is lightweight and sometimes even made of mesh. It keeps mosquitos and other insects away so you can enjoy your porch without worrying about mosquito bites!

Mosquito netting is available online and at hardware stores in a variety of colors and styles. If you have a patio table with an umbrella, opt for the type of netting that hangs from your umbrella, creating a mosquito-free zone around the table. If you have an overhang or covered porch, you might choose panels that hang from rods like traditional curtains. No matter which you choose, you’ll love banishing insects from your outdoor areas!

6. Create a Relaxing Atmosphere With a Tabletop Fire Pit

There’s nothing quite like a night around the fire pit but in Atlanta, it’s often too warm to fully enjoy a big fire. To get that bonfire atmosphere without the added heat, opt for a tabletop fire pit. These portable fire pits range from the size of a large candle to long, rectangular pits that make for an eye-catching centerpiece on your outdoor table. (And yes, you can still roast marshmallows over a tabletop fire pit!)
