Sound Reducing Windows: What They Are and How They Work

4 min read

One of the many great things about Atlanta is how much we have to offer: professional sports, live music, and a thriving downtown scene. But if you live anywhere near our highway system, stadiums, or downtown, you may not enjoy the noise that comes along with all the fun.

Did you know that replacement windows are an easy way to reduce the amount of outside noise that comes into your home? Yep!

Most people are aware that their new windows will increase energy efficiency and add curb appeal to their home, but they’re surprised at how much quieter their home is after they trade their old windows for modern insulated windows.

In this post, our window experts will explain how and why replacement windows are a great investment if you’d like to help reduce the amount of noise that comes into your Atlanta home.

What Are Soundproof Windows?

First, it’s important that we define “soundproof” when it comes to residential replacement windows. In this case, soundproof doesn’t mean that it completely blocks sound. In fact, there are no replacement windows that will block 100% of outside sound. To be considered soundproof, residential windows must reduce outside noise by at least 75%.

To measure the amount of sound a window blocks, we use a sound transmission class (STC) rating. It’s a simple scale that runs from 18-38. The higher the rating, the better the window is at reducing sound.

Most single pane windows have an STC rating of 26-28, while double and triple pane windows typically have an STC rating of 30 or higher. The two point difference may not seem like a big deal, but if you live in a noisy neighborhood or near a highway, you’ll hear a difference immediately.

The windows look great and filter out a lot of the outside noise. Overall, a great experience. I would recommend Window World of Atlanta to anyone looking to upgrade their home.

How Do Replacement Windows Reduce Noise?

Replacement windows dampen sound by putting more layers between you and the sound outside. Here are the three ways we accomplish that:

  • Use thicker glass
  • Add insulation between the window panes, like in double and triple pane windows
  • Laminated glass

For most customers, simply opting for insulated double or triple panes is enough to make a noticeable difference. If you’re concerned that may not be enough for your home, your Window World of Atlanta installer can help you determine what you need.

How Does Upgrading Your Window Panes Help With Soundproofing Windows?

If you currently have single-pane windows, you’ll know exactly how little of the outside world they filter out. Double-pane windows add an additional layer of protection against outside disruptions, with space between the two panes insulated with argon gas.  Triple-pane windows go a step further, with three panes of glass separating you from the hustle and bustle of your surroundings. At Window World of Atlanta, we offer double-pane windows as a standard option, with triple-pane windows available in many window styles.

Great experience. Huge difference in having high quality windows. I can’t hear the entire world outside. Plus it stays warmer in the house (maybe I won’t need extra insulation after all).

Can I DIY Soundproof Windows?

It might be tempting to DIY it instead of installing new windows, but we don’t recommend any do-it-yourself soundproofing methods.

Some of these products and techniques permanently change the appearance of your windows and your home. If you plan on selling your home in the future, potential buyers may not appreciate these alterations. Even if you’re not planning on selling, you may finish your DIY project and realize it doesn’t fit your style. (And if your windows are under a warranty, these alterations will almost certainly void the warranty.)

Other solutions are temporary, but not very effective, like noise blocking curtains and blinds. While it makes sense that adding thick fabric over your windows would dampen noise, that’s not actually how they work. These curtains and blinds simply alter the acoustics of the room, making it seem quieter. And since they can be pricey, you’ll probably end up paying for curtains that don’t block sound at all.

The best way to reduce the amount of noise that comes into your home by replacing your single pane windows with double or triple pane windows. And with Window World of Atlanta’s professional installation, you won’t have to worry about doing anything yourself.
